Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory of Human Retrovirology and Immunoinformatics (LHRI), Clinical Services Program, Applied/Developmental Directorate, has studied mechanism multiple drug resistance (MDR) of HIV and HIV pathogenesis by performing basic and clinical research. The mission of the LHRI is to support NIAID ongoing clinical therapy for HIV-infected patients by investigating the mechanism of immune and viral responses in infected individuals utilizing microbiological, biochemical, and immunological techniques, and bioinformatics analysis.  At this time, we are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate who has cell culture experience and microbiology knowledge and skills. The candidate will work in the Translational Research Section in LHRI to provide collaborative support to characterize a mechanism of HIV or other virus activation and recombination to support a NIAID translational research.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Isolation of T cells, monocytes, and other cells from PBMCs of healthy donors and HIV infected patients
  • Maintenance of cell culture (primary and cell lines, adherent and suspension cells)
  • Cloning of primary T cells
  • Extraction of RNA and DNA and performing RT-PCR, gene cloning and DNA sequence
  • Performing Western blotting's and ELISA
  • Transfection of DNA or RNA

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years related biomedical experience
  • Experience of handing of infectious materials, including isolation and purification of infectious viruses
  • Advanced micro cell culture skills
  • Experience in RNA work and molecular biology
  • Flexibility to work occasional weekends as needed
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in DNA sequence using 3500XL
  • Knowledge of microbiology and retrovirology
  • Cell biology knowledge and experience with primary cell culture and lymphocytes
  • Experience with extraction of genomic DNA and RNA from cells and tissues
