 Position Overview:


The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. The Gnotobiotics Facility (GF) team within the LASP assists research efforts focused on the role of microbiota in inflammation, pathogenesis, and anti-tumoral response.


As an Animal Caretaker I, you will be working with a diverse team in a state-of-the-art animal facility housing germ-free and gnotobiotic mice.  Your role will a variety of routine tasks associated with general laboratory animal care in support of basic and translational research performed by senior technical staff.  Responsibilities include feeding and general maintenance of laboratory rodents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Feeding and housing laboratory animals
  • General laboratory animal facility housekeeping
  • Keeping inventory of, ordering, and stocking supplies
  • Preparing facility supplies
  • Operating automatic washing and cleaning equipment
  • Keeping simple electronic and written records
  • Utilizing computer skills for email, training, and basic data entry
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • This is a change-in facility
  • Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours


To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Requires an 8th grade education or higher
  • Ability to keep accurate basic records
  • Very detail oriented
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wear respiratory protective equipment as necessary
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
