The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DECSRIPTION:

The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through the discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS and emerging infectious diseases.

The Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate works collaboratively and helps to fulfill the mission of Frederick National Laboratory in the areas of biomedical informatics and data science by developing and applying world leading data science and computing technologies to basic and applied biomedical research challenges, supporting critical operations, developing and delivering national data resources, and employing leading-edge software and data science.

The BIDS Strategic and Data Science Initiatives (SDSI) Group has been established within the BIDS directorate to undertake key initiatives and establish new collaborations in computing and data science to address cancer challenges and accelerate cancer research. A key focus of this group is to provide secure and robust data management platforms and services for scientific data in accordance with FAIR data principles supporting an increasing level of analysis for the ever-expanding collection of scientific datasets.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver enterprise software for data services platforms. Define and implement new APIs, capabilities, and architectures
  • Perform design, development and integration using agreed upon standards and tools
  • Identify and address technology challenges to develop robust, secure, and scalable products and solutions that meets or exceeds customer expectations
  • Partner and collaborate with SMEs and cross-functional teams to deliver results
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions
  • Mentor, coach, and lead software engineers. Manage sub-contractors as required
  • Participate in code reviews and sprint retrospectives
  • Maintain high standards of software quality while delivering solutions on-time and within budget
  • Keep abreast of emerging trends and advances in data management and provide inputs for roadmap development
  • Troubleshoot production issues

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirements, eight (8) years of of progressively responsible experience (software development)
  • Four (4) years in a production system
  • Experience in the design, development and testing of enterprise applications in a production environment. Solid programming skills with Java/J2EE
  • Experience with web UI libraries/frameworks
  • Experience with RESTful web services
  • Knowledge of Relational Database Systems. Experience with SQL
  • Familiarity with Linux
  • Familiarity with Source Control systems e.g., Github, SVN
  • Experience with debugging, performance profiling and optimization
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Possession of a Master’s degree
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Experience with cloud technologies e.g. AWS, GCP
  • Familiarity with data interchange formats e.g. JSON, XML
  • Familiarity with continuous integration tools, e.g. Jenkins, Travis
  • Knowledge of machine learning
  • Experience working with big data
