 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION         

The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNL) is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by the prime contractor Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. FNL is responsible for pursuing a unique mission in translational and applied biomedical research that is unsuitable for academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or other federal contractors.  This open position in Pharmacodynamics is ideally suited for a person who is more interested in applied Research & Development than in pursuing basic research knowledge.

The Clinical Pharmacodynamics Biomarkers Program is responsible for identification of biomarkers of response to new targeted agents entering clinical trials in the Developmental Therapeutics Program of the National Cancer Institute. The scope of work includes assay design, development, validation, fitness for purpose testing, transfer of assays to clinical laboratories, and clinical specimen analysis when required. PADIS facilitates mechanistic and performance analysis of putative anti-cancer agents, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic interventions to clinical applications, including distinct molecular signatures for cancer, refined molecular assays, and state-of-the-art imaging techniques that are too high-risk for industry or academia to pursue. 

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learn and become proficient with multiplex biomarker assays using immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Operate confocal microscope and state-of-the-art imaging equipment
  • Learn and become proficient on imaging fixed xenograft tissue sections and clinical specimen biopsies by following detailed technical SOPs
  • Learn and become proficient on state-of-the-art image analysis software to report quantitative biomarker measurements
  • Perform data analysis on multiple types of image files using advanced quantitative image analysis software following detailed technical SOPs for image analysis
  • Handle large data sets
  • Report quantitative clinical data precisely, accurately and completely
  • Assist in the transfer of validated assays and SOPs to operators in external labs through detailed training of others

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years related biomedical or clinical experience
  • Experience following SOPs and maintaining precise records
  • Experience preforming high complexity testing
  • Experience reporting data accurately and reliably
  • Ability to master novel technologies and instrumentation
  • Ability to communicate with project team in a demanding scientific environment
  • Ability to be flexible to meet changing needs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with imaging instrumentation and technologies (Nikon, Zeiss, Leica)
  • Experience with confocal microscopy
  • Experience with image analysis software
  • Experience with GraphPad software
  • Experience performing microscope-based assays
