The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS, and emerging infectious diseases. 

Position Overview:


The AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that pursues basic and applied studies aimed at improving our understanding of AIDS-associated viruses, including studies intended to facilitate the improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HIV infection and AIDS, and AIDS related tumors, particularly those associated with other viruses such as KSHV. The Program consists of five independent but highly interactive research Sections headed by Principal Investigators, whose work spans from fundamental molecular virology through in vitro studies, to in vivo studies in non-human primate (NHP) models, to international viral epidemiology.  The ACVP also has eight Research Support Core Groups (Cores) that provide critical and often unique technical support capabilities to ACVP laboratories and other laboratories within the NCI and NIH, and to extramural investigators.


We are looking for a ResearchTechnician to join our dynamic, interactive, multidisciplinary research team working on AIDS pathogenesis and development of vaccines for prevention of HIV infection and AIDS, working with non-human primate models.  The successful candidate will be able to work in a close team environment, consistently follow detailed protocols and instructions, and keep careful records. Specific duties will include:

  • Processing of potentially infectious blood and tissue specimens from non-human primates
  • Preparation/formulation of drug compounds
  • Operation of laboratory equipment
  • Updating and maintaining detailed sample databases

Performs other related duties as assigned by a responsible authority. Independently perform and learn the application of new laboratory techniques; use specialized laboratory instruments; perform delicate manual procedures as required; keep accurate data on experiments; follow and apply standard laboratory production protocols and procedures; assist laboratory personnel; provide reliable, independent, and versatile support to biomedical research or production work unit. Communicate effectively and proactively, orally and in writing. General knowledge of systems utilized and program principles such as: A variety of specialized laboratory techniques and procedures used in biomedical research or production; sterilization techniques; scientific methods; the metric system; and standard instruments used in a laboratory.


  • Possession of an BA/BS degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • No experience is required with a Bachelor's degree
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment (freezers, balances, pipettes, centrifuges, etc)
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


  • Prior experience handling potentially infectious materials (will train)
  • Knowledge of BSL2* safety practices, handling potentially infectious material (HIV, SIV, SHIV)
  • Experience with Laboratory Inventory Management Systems (LIMS) or Filemaker Pro software
  • Prior animal research experience, handling blood and tissue samples from non-human primates
  • Valid driver’s license

  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
  • This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
